How to boost my sperm?
Before shopping for supplements to boost your sperm, let’s review once more how testicular cancer treatments can affect your sperm and your fertility.
Medically reviewed by Urologic Oncologist Dr. Robert J. Hamilton on 01/30/2022
As long as the remaining testicle is healthy, losing one teste is unlikely to affect your sperm count and your ability to have children. However, some people may have fertility problems as the other testicle may be small and make less sperm.
We also know that both chemotherapy and radiation therapy can temporarily decrease sperm production and cause unhealthy sperm. It may take one or more years before there are enough healthy sperm to conceive a child. In some cases, infertility may be permanent. As for lymph-node surgery, you may lose the ability to ejaculate normally , which means you will most likely be unable to conceive a child through natural means even though your remaining testicle may contain ample amounts of good quality sperm.
That is why your urologist may or will advise you to store sperm at a sperm banking facility before treating your testicular cancer. Now does that mean that your littles guys will never be able to take up that swimming challenge towards a family expansion goal? No! It just means that if you want children, sperm banking can be the right decision, just to be on the safe side.
With that in mind, you still want to boost your sperm to make sure you can father a child? And you are asking us what is the best deal in the world with regards to herbs and supplements? Geeez!
Can herbs and supplements boost my sperm?
First, a little Google search with supplements to boost sperm count keywords generated about 1,280,000 results in 66 seconds! Subject of interest you say? Secondly, herbs and supplements to boost your sperm or erections and the many aphrodisiac concoctions (food, plants, spices, among others) to improve your sexual performance are not new; they exist since the dawn of time and are still attracting lots of interest.
However, with regards to your sperm and according to the Mayo Clinic, there's no evidence in the medical literature that supports herbs or supplements as a treatment for infertility. The research on so-called fertility herbs and supplements is inconclusive and based on a few small studies. Some of the fertility herbs and supplements studied include L-carnitine, Vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10, Folic acid, Vitamin C. This is echoed in many study analyses and from other institutions like Harvard.
Disappointed? You have the right to be. You see, if there was evidence that a single food or supplement could improve your sperm healh and count, your libido, your erections, performance or sexual pleasure, it would probably be sold all over the planet at a very high price. And we would all envy that rich nerd…
Natural does not mean safe
Choosing a medicinal plant is not always easy especially when there are several options, formulations, a combination of plants and brands of products for your sperm. The advice of those around you may not be your best option either.
Also, be aware that, in Canada and the United States, herbal medicines - or any other natural health product (NHP) - are not subject to the same testing and approval requirements as prescription and over-the-counter drugs.
Talk to your doctor first. List all the vitamins, minerals, and other supplements you take or intend to buy, especially if you are fighting testicular cancer or are being treated for infertility. Some vitamins and minerals can interfere with your treatments or the action of your medications.
So what should I do?
Diet, weight and exercise! Eating a healthy, balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, cutting down on alcohol, not smoking and not using recreational drugs are essential for keeping your sperm in good condition.
As for fathering a child, it may seem obvious, but you need to have regular sex (2 or 3 times a week) if you want to become a dad. Having sex around the time your partner ovulates (when an egg is released from the ovary) will increase your chances of conceiving as well. There are smart phone apps to help narrow down the dates of ovulation in order to time sex accordinly.
And remember: Some people get pregnant quickly, but for others it can take longer. One thing is for sure. If the whole sperm-daddy-baby thing is not fun or stressful, rethink how you (and your partner) are dealing with the situation and please, do seek help.
